Graduation Celebration

Thursday night last was Graduation Night in St. Paul’s Community College. It began with a beautiful and moving ceremony in St Paul’s Church, attended by all our Sixth Years, their teachers, parents and families. Then it was back to the school for the second half of the proceedings. After speeches from Principal Mrs. Anne Curran and Sixth Year Darren Walsh, who spoke on behalf of the students, the students were presented with their Year Books, containing group and individual photographs as well as memories and highlights of their years in school. Mrs. Anne Kavanagh, who has acted as Year Head for the group for six years, was presented with flowers and gifts by the students in appreciation of the wonderful work she had done for them all. In a moving address to the students, Mrs Kavanagh looked back with fondness over their years in school and wished them all every success in their future lives. Then the audience enjoyed a slide show of photographs of the boys and girls taken and recorded over their years in school. The school presented each of the students with specially commissioned memory sticks containing these photographs and memories. The celebration ended with refreshments for the students and their families

Well done to all who helped to make the night such a memorable occasion and very best wishes to a wonderful group of Sixth Years .

Michaelston Community College Cardiff

Pictured above is guest Storyteller, Reuben entertaining students from our school and visiting students from Michaelston Community College, in our school library.

Students and teachers from our e-twin school, Michaelston Community College in Cardiff, paid a visit to our school on Tuesday 18th May. Twelve students and two teachers came to have a look at how our school operates and to meet staff and students. Lots of activities took place with our students giving the travelling party a hearty welcome early in our assembly hall with fun activities and food. The visitors got a tour of the school and attended a mini-concert by our traditional dancers and school band/choir. After morning break the teachers and students from Michaelston viewed a game of hurling in true traditional style, donning helmets and hurleys in a closely contested game between ourselves and Gael Choláiste Phortláirge. The girls also took part in some Gaelic Football Training. Lunch was provided for our visitors where they enjoyed pizza cooked in our home economics room. After lunch the group from Cardiff joined our first year classes in the school library to meet story-teller Rueben, who entertained them for over an hour. After this the group paid an educational visit to the Granary Museum in Waterford and were very impressed with the local history on show there. Later in the evening the group were joined once again by twelve of our first year students who took them out for a nights bowling. Following an exhaustive day the group then retired to their hotel after thanking Ms Curran, Principal, teachers and students for providing them with a very busy, educating and fun-filled day. The group return home on Thursday after doing a tour of the Wexford Museum. They also invited us to pay a return trip next year. No doubt there will be plenty of enthusiasm amongst our students!

One Book One Waterford Literacy Project

“Titanic - Disaster” book by Vincent McDonnell

The “Titanic” One Book One Waterford Literacy Project has been running since Christmas over ten schools in Waterford City. The project involved all first year and sixth class students reading the one book – “Titanic Disaster” by author Vincent McDonnell. The aim of the project was to raise literacy awareness amongst younger students. After reading the book 10 schools took part in an inter-schools quiz based on the Titanic in which St. Paul's Community College came joint third. The students also visited the Titanic Exhibition in City West Hotel, Dublin, on May 6th, and had a great day out. A major aspect of the project was for students in all 10 schools to write a piece of prose (essay) or poem related to any topic on the Titanic and the book. The overall winner of this competition from each school would then go forward for the Mayors Prize to be presented by the Lord Mayor of Waterford John Halligan. There was a massive response from all the 10 schools. In St. Paul's Community College alone there were nearly 40 entries, all of a very high standard. Victoria Paulowska’s essay on the Titanic was adjudged by our in-school judging committee and City Library Waterford to be the overall winner of the competition in St. Paul's Community College. Victoria and four other students from St Paul’s, Ross Griffin, Tess Breslin, Dale Hayes and Daryl Sheridan were presented with their prizes at First Year Assembly. Victoria then went on to represent our school in the Mayors Prize final, which involved finalists from all 10 schools. Victoria’s work was highly commended by the Mayor and she received a prize of a book voucher for City Square Book Centre. Well done to Victoria and congratulations on her literacy successes. She is a very talented writer.

On Thursday last 13th May St Paul’s hosted its annual Prize Night in the Assembly Hall. This is the school’s most important celebration of the year, it is a night when we publicly acknowledge and recognize the outstanding achievements of many of our students, not only on the academic and sporting fronts but also across a broad spectrum of activities, ranging from work both in the school and in the wider community, national competitions, literary, musical and artistic achievements and business and enterprise initiatives.

The hall was packed to capacity with the students receiving awards, their proud parents and family members, teaching staff and invited guests. The opening address was delivered by Councillor Jim Darcy, Chairperson of both Waterford VEC and the school Board of Management. Then it was with great pride we welcomed back past pupil Mark Power, journalist and broadcaster with WLR FM who delivered a very inspirational and entertaining keynote address to a captive audience.
.

In her closing address Principal Mrs. Anne Curran congratulated all the prizewinning students on their achievements. She also thanked the Councillors, invited guests, Parents Council and teaching staff, especially Ms Anne Kavanagh who was an excellent Master of Ceremonies on the evening.

FORMULA ONE NATIONAL COMPETITION

Congratulations to ‘Team Kestral’,the Transition Year Formula One group which was so successful in the national final of the competition held in Griffith College Dublin on Thursday last 29th April. The team won second place in the Senior Cycle section of the competition and were outright winners in the Sponsorship and Marketing category. The team members- Dean Lavin, Dale Kervick, Conor Reidy, Eoin Sheridan and Aoife Flynn were thrilled with the results and with the awards and certificates they were presented with at the ceremony. Team Kestral would like to take this opportunity to thank their generous sponsors. They greatly appreciated all the help they received from the staff, and want to say a big thank you in particular to Mr. Collins, Mr. Mullen and Hilary Cantwell, school librarian, for all their hard work.

LOCAL HISTORY PROJECT

Well done to the Transition Year Local History group on their wonderful project, Waterford- Continuity and Change 1890- 2010, currently exhibited in Waterford Museum of Treasures. Using the images of old Waterford from the book ‘Shadows of the Past’ the students embarked on a project to photograph many of the street scenes and buildings as they are today and present both images side by side in what resulted in a stunning photographic exhibition. The project was displayed to coincide with the launch by Waterford Civic Trust of a PowerPoint presentation of the images in the Granary on Thursday last. Professor Kieran Byrne, WIT, launching the presentation, praised the students for their great work and their keen awareness of their architectural heritage.

GAISCE- THE PRESIDENT’S AWARD

Last Thursday and Friday the Transition Year Gaisce Bronze Medal group embarked on the Adventure Journey component of the programme. This entailed the planning, preparation and undertaking of a 2-day adventure journey in Portally, Dunmore East, during the course of which they undertook a 26km walk. Well done to all participants and thanks to Ms. Collins, Ms. Ryan and Mr. O Grady for their help with this venture.

LILLIPUT TRIP

On Tuesday May 4th a group of our Transition Year students had a great day out at the Lilliput Adventure Centre in Co. Westmeath. It was a memorable day and great fun for the students who enjoyed a range of adventure activities, including Kayaking, Orienteering and Zip Sliding.

MULTICULTURAL DAY

St. Paul’s held its first Multicultural Day last week. The occasion was a celebration of our international students, and an opportunity to educate and inform all our students about different countries and cultures. In all, eighteen countries were highlighted on wonderfully colourful displays in the Assembly Hall. All our TY students worked hard on researching and presenting different aspects of a chosen country- they detailed the history and geography of each and included details on lifestyle, food and music. All year groups had the opportunity to visit the exhibition, to learn more about diversity and to ask questions about different cultures and traditions. It was a great success and was made all the more so by the attendance of so many parents of our international students, who brought along some traditional food for all to enjoy.

POSITIVE LIVING WEEK

Keenly aware of the value of the holistic education of students and ever conscious of the social pressures many of our young people face, the Pastoral Care Team in the school recently organized a Positive Living Week. Guest speakers from AA, Al Anon, Al Ateen, Aware, Drugs Awareness as well as a local JLO spoke to groups of students from First to Sixth Year. All these talks were very well received and we would like to thank all the speakers who gave so generously of their time.

NATIVE WOODLAND TRUST

The Native Woodland Trust has embarked on an initiative whereby secondary schools around the country are given a number of different species of trees to plant in their environs. This project is part of the Trust’s drive to increase the number of deciduous trees grown in Ireland. St Paul’s Transition Year students have become involved with this endeavour when the Trust supplied thirty native hardwood trees that they planted in the school grounds. The students were made aware that the work doesn’t stop when the trees were planted and that aftercare is vitally important. Watering and weed control of the newly planted trees will now be the responsibility of the students.

SCIENCE ACTIVITY DAY

ON Wednesday of last week First Year students and Class 2P enjoyed the first ever Science Activity Day in St. Pauls. The students were each presented with specially designed T-shirts at the start of the day. Then they participated in an hour-long interactive workshop in each of the sciences-Physics, chemistry and Biology.
Highlights of the day included Mr. Doheny proving he really does have money to burn, making ice cream with liquid nitrogen and meeting our creepy crawly friends, the earthworms.
Students and staff from the ASD unit joined in the activities and thoroughly enjoyed the busy day.

At 12.00 there was a quiz based on the day’s events and spot prizes and certificates were awarded. We would like to thank the Physics Department at W.I.T. and Hilary our librarian for all their help on the day and we look forward to an even bigger and better Science Activity Day in 2011

THAR AN TRASNÁN

Congratulations to our Senior Hurlers who, for the second year running, won the All Ireland Thar an Trasnán Competition in Thurles last week.

U.14 South East Cup

St. Pauls 4 Mount Sion 1 (AET)

A thrilling game was witnessed in Mount Sion on Tuesday last. Despite what the scoreline might suggest this game was by no means one sided. Chances were had by both teams throughout a very evenly matched first half. Some great goalkeeping and defending by both teams left it 0-0 at half time.

Early in the second half we took the lead through a great finish by Captain Dean Reidy. However, the lead only lasted a matter of minutes before Mount Sion levelled. The game finished 1-1, as did the first half of extra time. A second goal by Dean gave us the lead early in the second half of extra time. Two goals in quick succession by Corey Kavanagh and Adam Sutton finished off the scoring. Special mention to the 1st years who came on during the game and made all the difference -Martin Holohan, Dylan English and man of the match Craig Norris.

Pictured below are a group of students planting trees under the Native Woodland Trust schools initiative at St Paul's Community College.

APRIL News 2010

Passing of Ms Anne Madigan

Everyone in St. Paul’s was deeply saddened by the death of former staff member, Anne Madigan (pictured above), on March 27th.

Anne was a Guidance Counsellor in the school from 1989 to 2007. A deeply caring woman who always brought out the best in everyone, she worked tirelessly with and for our students, guiding them in their career choices and providing compassion, support and encouragement to any of them who were experiencing personal difficulties. Anne had a profound effect on all who came in contact with her. She remembered her students long after they left St. Pauls and loved to hear of their successes and achievements.

St. Paul’s was a better school because of Anne’s dedication and commitment. She was responsible for many new initiatives- she started the Young Social Innovators programme, introduced the Mentoring Programme and was a key person in the formation of the school’s Student Council.

She enjoyed the company of young people and liked nothing more than to accompany them to open days, workshops and conferences. Anne also worked tirelessly to promote some of her cherished ideals- awareness of the environment, social inclusion and the developing world, with a particular interest in fair trade.

Bhí áit speisialta i gcroí Áine don Ghaeilge agus ba mhinic í ag trácht ar Oileán Chléire.
Thapaidh sí aon deis a ghabh a treo chun an Ghaeilge a labhairt agus a chur chun cinn.

We will all sorely miss her warmth and compassion and her wonderful sense of humour. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Michael Sweetman Education Trust

This year two 6th Year LCA students from St. Paul‘s Community College, Nicola Hutchinson and Kirsty McGuire were among a group of twenty Irish students who were successful in winning the prestigious Michael Sweetman Education Trust Competition.
This Trust was established in memory of the economist and pro-European Michael Sweetman, who died along with 117 others in an airline crash in 1972. Every year , the Michael Sweetman Education Trust runs a competition for students from Vocational Schools, Colleges and Centres. The prize for winners is a trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg .

Nicola and Kirsty won the competition on the basis of their excellent work on contemporary issues in Social Education as well as succeeding in the follow up interview.

The girls had a very enjoyable and interesting four day trip to Strasbourg, the highlight of which was their day long attendance at the European Parliament , where along with 600 students from all across Europe and in the presence of four MEPs they participated in Euroscola, the pan -European youth forum.

SOCCER SQUAD SAY THANKS

As the end of the school year draws closer the members of the school soccer teams would like to say a big thank you to Mrs. Collins. Just last month she guided St.Paul’s to yet more success on the playing field, with our senior soccer team conquering Munster for the second time since 2006. Her knowledge of the game is second to none, a fact borne out by her involvement over many years with the FAI. Without her dedication, hard work, generosity and commitment, soccer in St Paul’s wouldn’t be the great success it has become. So go raibh mile maith agat and keep up your extraordinary work!

DAEL O BRIEN

Congratulations to 6th Year student Dael O’Brien who was the outright winner of the RTE Drumming Competition this week. The auditions for this competition started back in October last and having been successful in the regional heat, Dael advanced to the next stage. He performed on RTE 2 in March and after that it was up to the voting to determine the winner. On Tuesday last Dael was announced as the national winner and on Wednesday he was presented in RTE with his prize of a fantastic DW Black Sparkle Drum Kit with a value of over 6000 euro.

MAKE A BOOK

The national Make a Book Exhibition takes place in City Hall, Cork on Tuesday next. Class 2p will represent the school with their book on how to make a bodhran . The title of the book is “Tipper me Bodhran”. The 2P boys have worked really hard on this project- they made the bodhrans themselves in woodwork class, they designed and personalised the skins and then wrote up their records. We hope everyone will be impressed with their great efforts in Cork next week.

CSPE

For their Action Research Project in CSPE, Class 3P attended a workshop on Democracy and Local Government in the school library last week. Presented by AnneMarie McSorley, Education Officer with the Oireachtas,,this was a very informative and enjoyable learning experience as the workshop was an interactive one where all the students could become involved in finding out more about how our city and county councils work. The students were especially pleased with the attendance of local representative Senator Maurice Cummins, who engaged in a question and answer session with them afterwards.

On the subject of CSPE , Class 3T will visit Kilkenny Courthouse on Monday next. The students are looking forward to this, they have been studying the legal system in class and now they will have the opportunity of seeing the practical side of Irish law.

SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE

Last week was Seachtain na Gaeilge and the Irish Department was very busy organising a poster competition for Junior School students. The completed posters looked very well on the corridors and raised awareness among all the students of the week’s events. As well as many class based activities, on Thursday there was a Trath Na gCeist for 1st Years. This was organised and run by 5th Year students, who did a great job dividing the first years into teams and writing the questions, acting as quizmasters and keeping tally of the scores. Well done to all involved. Our very active Home Economics Department entered into the spirit of the week by providing a mouth watering selection of traditional Irish fare- apple cakes, bracks etc- for the staff at break time. All proceeds from this coffee morning went to Concern.

LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL

Best of luck to St Paul’s Ladies Gaelic Football Junior team who play Cobh next week in the Munster quarter final..

SCHOOL TOURS

St Paul’s runs two trips abroad each year- a ski trip for 4th years and a visit to Paris for 2nd Years. A group of our Transition Years students are just back after enjoying a wonderful week skiing in Ehrwald in Austria. It was the first time skiing for many of the group but they took to the slopes very well and by the end of the week were managing to ski off piste. The 2nd Years are looking forward to their trip to Paris and Disneyworld in early May.

SOCCER NEWS

MUNSTER YOUTH CUP FINAL

St Paul’s Community College vs. St’Declan’s Kilmacthomas.

On Friday last our lads competed in an all Waterford Munster Final. The R.S.C was the venue for this encounter, eagerly anticipated by an attendance in excess of .
The game started in a competitive fashion with both sides exchanging attacks early on. Glenn Hawe was causing havoc down the right, with Sean O‘Loughlin and Mark Phelan coming close early on. Some great defending by Eric Marsh saw Paul’s come on the attack once more, and an incredible cross by Stephen Roche saw Ian Galgey just miss with a glancing header. Finally the pressure paid off with Ian Galgey combining with Glenn Hawe from a quick corner, setting up Mark Phelan to put us one-nil up . That’s how it ended at half time. Mrs. Collins delivered an excellent team talk during the break and her tactics paid off with the introduction at the beginning of the second half of international Brian Nolan. This move saw skipper Shane Nolan go up top and he doubled our lead early into the second half with a sweet strike from the edge of the box.

It was all St Paul’s now as their dominance showed and a Brian Nolan free kick saw his twin Shane head it on, the ball took a massive deflection and hit the net for our third goal. That’s how it ended and well earned celebrations were in full flight after the game.

U.14 South East Cup

St. Pauls CC 4 Abbey CC 1

A great start to the competition playing away to Abbey in Ferrybank AFC grounds.
We started very strong in this game with numerous chances on goal, however we couldn’t manage to find the opening goal. On 15 minutes a fantastic run from Dean Reidy from midfield continued into the box for him to slot the ball into the back of the net. Before half time Abbey came back at us and levelled the game at the break.
After a shot from Michael Collins struck the arm of an Abbey defender, Geoff Tebay slotted home from the penalty spot. Within 10 minutes Geoff scored his second, before Adam Caulfield finished off the scoring with a great shot from the edge of the box. Man of the match was Dylan Robinson.

TECHNOLOGY DAY IN ST. PAULS

PICTURED BELOW ARE A GROUP OF STUDENTS FROM EDUCATE TOGETHER WHO VISITED ST PAULS COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOR ‘TECHNOLOGY DAY’PICTURED WITH THEIR WOODWORK AND METAL WORK PROJECTS AND CERTIFICATES
Launch of One Book One Waterford – “Titanic” by Vincent McDonnell

A literacy initiative to promote reading in schools and homes in city was launched on Tuesday last in St. Paul’s Community College school library. The literacy initiative is titled “One Book One Waterford” and is the work of the Home School Community Liaison Scheme including local HSCL teachers, class teachers, parents and Waterford City Library. The book chosen for the initiative is “Titanic – Tragedy” by author Vincent McDonnell, who was there to launch the project in the presence of Mayor John Halligan, Lord Mayor of Waterford and an invited audience.

Ten primary and secondary schools are involved in the initiative. These are St Paul’s Community College, Presentation Secondary School, Mount Sion Secondary School, St Paul’s Boys National School, Presentation Primary School, St Saviour’s National School, Mercy National School, De La Salle Stephen Street National School, Mount Sion National school and Scoil Lorcán National School. One Book One Waterford is an event that encourages people of the same community to read the same book at the same time. From now until the Summer our schools and community becomes one giant book club. Not only will students and pupils in each school read “Titanic – Disaster” during the course of the initiative, their parents, friends, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, grannies and granddads are also encouraged to read about the tragic story of the Titanic.

After brief introductions by Mrs Anne Curran, Principal of St. Paul’s Community College; and an address by Mayor Halligan, the initiative was launched by Vincent McDonnell, author of “Titanic – Disaster”, who paid a special two day visit to Waterford on the invitation of Waterford City Library. He stressed the importance of encouraging and helping children acquire a love of reading and books, a skill that would remain with them for the rest of their lives. “Titanic – Disaster” was a popular choice of book in that it has a fantastic cross-curricular element and is engrossing, interesting and written in a way that is attractive and easy to read for children. Mayor Halligan praised the project for its educational content and hoped the book would reach beyond the school and into the home and community. It is very important that children become competent readers and any project or initiative that helps and encourages this is most welcome he said. He praised the Local Committee and Waterford City Library for their insight and initiative in setting up the project and wished all involved the best of luck.

The project is funded by the Department of Education and Science, City of Waterford VEC and Waterford City Library. Vincent McDonnell visited students and pupils in first year and sixth classes in the participating schools to encourage their reading of the book, provide some background information and answer the myriad of questions children ask about the sinking of the Titanic. Each pupil got a free copy of the book. Many activities and events are planned around One Book One Waterford including a schools table quiz, class resource packs and a visit to the Titanic Exhibition running in City West Hotel Dublin.

Thanks must go to the parents on the Local Committee for their dedicated work. Thanks too to Waterford City Library and librarian Niamh Baldwin. The books have been distributed and hopefully pupils, students and all in our community are busy reading and bringing the joy of reading from the school into the home and wider community. Anyone who wishes to become involved in the reading initiative please contact any of the schools, Waterford City Library or your local bookshop.

Pictured above in our school library are Mayor John Halligan and Author Vincent O'Donnell with Principal, Anne Curran, HSCL teacher Ger Lohan, Librarian Hilary Cantwell, Parents from the Local Committee Lynda O'Shea, Ger Burke and Eileen Gould with first year students who were presented with their books on the day.

DRAMA

Next week Waterford Youth Arts will visit the school to stage a performance of a new play by Nicholas Kavanagh. This play was commissioned by Waterford City Council as part of its mission to counteract graffiti and vandalism in our city. The title of the play is Vandal, it is a thought provoking piece of theatre about graffiti and the impact it has on society. The play should prove particularly topical as well as relevant as it also explores some of the issues faced by young people today, such as self esteem, peer pressure and choice making and conflict resolution.

FORMULA ONE COMPETITION

The Transition Year Formula One group- John Long, Dean Lavin, Eoin Sheridan, Dale Kervick, Brian Condon and Conor Reidy-will travel to Cork on Tuesday next to take part in the Regional Final of the Formula One competition.
The boys have been very busy over the last few months- they designed the Formula One Car on CAD and then had the car itself manufactured for them in C.I.T. The students then had to make the display stand for the project, with an integrated laptop and TV monitor for their audio visual presentation. Wind tunnel tests were conducted last week to see how aerodynamic and stable the car is.

A big part of the project involved the students designing and making a website which is now up and running. For more information on the project see www.stpaulsfi.go2.ie

HAITI APPEAL

As an ongoing part of the school’s efforts for Haiti, our school collection was followed this week by a very successful Jumble Sale. The TY students put a huge effort into this endeavour and were very grateful for the overwhelming generosity of students, staff and members of the public , both for donating so many items and for supporting the sale on the day.

During the morning session the students learned a great deal about all different aspects of the Irish legal system, the different courts and how they operate, the law itself and the details of some well known court cases. In the afternoon the students enacted a Mock Trial- each student was allocated a specific role- judge, defendant, jury member etc. The whole course was a very valuable learning experience for the students who will now go on to sit their Public Access to Law exam next week. As their interest in the law continues to grow they are looking forward to visiting the Four Courts in Dublin in April. Attached photographs show students Jackie Walsh and John Long participating in a mock trial during the PAL workshop.

St. Paul’s C.C. through to Munster Colleges Senior Hurling Semi-Final

Congratulations to our Senior Hurling Team who got through to the semi-finals of the Munster Colleges Corn Phádraig “B” Championship by beating Carrigaline C.S. in the quarter final last Wednesday played at Youghal GAA pitch. Carrigaline opened the scoring early in the first half before St. Paul’s settled and Stephen Roche got St. Paul’s opening point. The teams were well matched for the opening quarter but then St Paul’s began to pull away with some excellent scores from frees and play by Gavin O’Brien and Shane Nolan. Practically on the whistle of half time Shane Nolan scored a well deserved goal to leave the half time score at 1-9 to 0-5. Scores in the second half from Gavin O’Brien, Shane Nolan, Stephen Roche, Brian Nolan and Eoin Madigan saw St. Paul’s run out deserved winners at the end of the match on a final score line of 1-17 to 0-12. Credit must go to all players who excelled in all areas of the pitch and to goalkeeper Emmett O’Toole who made some excellent saves during the match. Despite a physical game played on a soft pitch, the game was played with discipline and skill by both sides. No cards were issued by the referee during the match. This is a credit to the way both teams handled themselves on the day. We now look forward to meeting Tramore C.B.S. in the semi-final scheduled to be played on February 10th, venue to be announced. Well done and good luck to all involved in the semi-final. All in St. Paul's Community College wish the team continuing success. (Team: E. O’Toole, D. Duggan, S. O’Neill, L. We managed to score 8 points out of 10 so hopefully we will reach the final again this year. Last year we won out the national competition by beating a Galway school in the final held in Thurles. Good luck to all involved. Video clips of last year success can be seen on the school website at www.stpaulswaterford.ie

FASHION SHOW AT ST. PAUL’S COMMUNITY COLLEGE

It was glamour and glitz all the way on Wednesday evening last when St. Paul’s Community College presented its Annual Fashion Show to a packed hall. The models were students of the school, from First to Sixth Year, who amazed and impressed the audience by the confidence they displayed as they strutted their stuff on the catwalk. This was the first time modelling for many of them but one would never think that , they were first class and contributed enormously to the enjoyment of the night. We were delighted to have wonderful children to help out modelling some very cute kiddies ‘ clothes and of course all eyes were on the stage at the end of the show when members of the teaching and office staff graced the catwalk to tremendous cheers.

The Compere for the evening was Mr. Keith Bailey who, with his characteristic good humour, was outstanding, introducing the models, putting them at their ease whilst eloquently describing the outfits.

There was a wide variety of fashion on display from sixteen local retailers, ranging from children’s wear, sports and equestrian wear, smart casual clothes for teenage boys and girls, up to stunning cocktail and debs dresses for the older girls and sophisticated dress suits for the young men. Our grand finale brought the house down as members of staff appeared as an elegant and stylish Bridal Party.

The retailers showcased were: Tommy Hilfiger, Bay@Shaws, Next, Missi, Warehouse @Shaws, Pure, Stonehaven, No Name, Jack & Jones, Greenhouse, The Clothes Horse, Fitzgerald’s, K-Sport, Tutus &Tapshoes, Debutante Dresses @ K-Sport and Cocktail at Sabella Bridal.

A huge amount of hard work went into staging the show and and the effort made by all is much appreciated- to the fantastic troupe of models, to those who organised ticket sales, catwalk construction, artwork, advertising and posters, music and lighting, we say a huge thank you. We are very grateful too for the generosity of our many sponsors who donated a wide variety of fantastic raffle prizes. This was very much a team effort but special mention must be made of the exceptional effort of Ms. Michelle Browne who undertook the overall planning and production of the show.

Well done to all and we are already looking forward to next year’s show! Below are a few pictures from the show.

November 2009

FASHION SHOW

Our annual fashion Show takes place in the schoolon Wednesday 2nd December . The Fashion Show is our main fundraising event in the year and in these difficult times of cutbacks it is more important than ever that it is well supported. Tickets are 10 euro and are available at the school from 11 am every day or at the door on Wednesday evening. Doors open at 7.15 with the show starting at 7.30.

This year we will showcase an array of stylish and contemporary clothes for men ,women and children presented in a fun and festive fashion. Once again we are fortunate to be generously sponsored by a host of retailers from Waterford city and county. To these, and all staff and students who have worked so hard in putting the show together, we say a big thank you.

FORMULA ONE

Once again this year Mr. Collins and Mr. Mullen are working with a group of Transition Year students who have entered the International Formula One Competition. Six students- Dean Lavin, Glenn Condon, Conor Reidy, John Long, Dale Kervick and Eoin Sheridan have designed their own model racing car which has been entered into the preliminary stage of the competition.

The criteria for this stage include designing the car, website design, marketing strategies and a multimedia presentation. If the students are successful they will progress to the Regional Finals to be held in Cork in the New Year. We wish all involved every success in this exciting venture.

STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTION

Our Student Council Election took place in October this year. Following the precedent set by last year’s Third Years, Class 3L undertook the organisation of the election as their Action Research Project for Junior Cert CSPE. The election itself generated great excitement on the day with election posters, polling booths and of course the count. For many of our students this was their first experience of voting and was a practical introduction to democracy in action.

NOVEMBER EXAMS

Last week saw our Junior Cert and Leaving Cert students sit formal examinations in all subjects in the Sports Hall. This first round of ‘mock’ exams gave the students an opportunity to gauge their progress as well as gaining valuable examination experience. The results of these exams will be discussed at upcoming parent-teacher meetings.

DAYS OUT

The Fifth Year History and Art classes had a great day in Dublin on Wednesday last visiting Collins Barracks Museum, the National Museum, the G.P.O. and Trinity College and on Thursday many of our Transition Year and Fifth Year students visited the Careers Exhibition in Woodlands hotel .

SPORTS

1st Year Soccer Futsal Tournament

Last Monday St. Paul’s hosted the Waterford FAI Futsal Tournament. Six teams took part - Mount Sion, Abbey Community College, CBS Tramore , De La Salle and two teams from St. Paul’s. The tournament was played in a round robin format with the top two qualifying for the final.

Both St. Paul’s teams did very well on the day, ending up playing each other for a place in the final, with the A team winning a closely fought match 2-0..
After winning all but one group game, thanks to goals from Jamie Robinson (5) Aaron Coad (4) Craig Norris (3) Jamie Grant (3) and Dale Hayes (2), our A team qualified for the final against De La Salle. A fantastic whole team performance and a goal from captain Aaron Coad led to St. Paul’s running out winners in a very close, game.

This team now qualify for the Munster Finals in Cork in January. Best of luck to the whole team.
Team: Neil Sheridan, Aaron Coad, Jamie Grant, Dale Hayes, Martin Holohan, Craig Norris, Jamie Robinson and Conor Rochford.
Manager: Derek O’Brien

Thanks to the Gary Power of the FAI for organising the tournament and Mairead Collins for hosting it.

Members of the new Parents Council - Joan Barry, Eileen Gould, Lynda O'Shea, Ger Burke and Anne Murphy - take a break in their school office from working on the Book Rental Scheme for the school.Trojan work has gone into the Scheme again this year and the ladies are to be complimented on their hard work and effort.

SCIENCE WEEK

Once again this year ‘s Science Week proved to be one of the busiest weeks of our school year.
On Monday last out First Year students were highly entertained and enthused by the Chemistry Display in W.I.T.

On Tuesday the Third Years, who are very busy preparing their Junior Cert Science projects, took time out to attend an excellent Physics of the Body lecture presented by W.I.T
The senior students attended a very interesting and topical lecture on Forensics. Their fascination with this topic will be further fuelled when they attend the CSI Exhibition in Dublin shortly.

Our ties with Waterford Primary schools continue to expand and this year we have opened our doors to students of Faithlegge N.S who visitied our three Science Labs on Thursday where they were given an introduction to Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Science Week drew to a close on Friday when our 5th Year students made their annual visit to Butlerstown N.S to conduct a spectular display of Chemistry experiments.

FISHING CLUB

St.Paul’s Fishing Club is now in its fifteenth year and has over thirty members, from First to Sixth year. So far this year we have had two very successful competitions held in Woodstown.

At present three of the club’s members, John Barry, Stephen O’Rourke and Liam o’Rourke are competing for a place on the Munster Sea Angling Team. Their next competitive event will be in Cheekpoint on Saturday next and we wish all three of them well.

As we are now in the Sea Angling season our competitions are being held in Woodstown and Passage.

BODHRAN MEETING

Mr. Collins has embarked on a Bodhran Making project with a group of his Second Year Woodwork students. Work is well underway and the students should have their bodhrans completed in time for Christmas.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

The annual Operation Christmas Child Appeal took place in the school over the last couple of weeks. Our students put huge effort into filling beautifully decorated boxes with toys, clothes , treats etc and sending them as Christmas presents to children in need living in countries such as Romania, Belarus, Moldova and Mozambique. Well done to all for their generosity and hard work.

Public Access to Law Course (Transition Year)

This course prepares students for participation in the National Mock Trial Competition , the finals of which will take place in the Four Courts in Dublin in May 2010.. The 25 Transition Year students participating began working on case material in September and on December 14th they will be visited by leading barrister, Mr. James Fahy, who will assist them on their preparation for the Competition.

Failte Ireland Hospitality Course

A small group of TY students met with Tara Carey of Failte Ireland last week for an introduction to a Hospiality Course which will begin on 24th November and run for four weeks.

One World Development Centre

Four of our TY students have now completed their training with Waterford One World Centre. This week they begin their visits to local primary schools , where they will run Workshops to raise awareness on global gender equality and empowerment of women. We wish them every success in this worthwhile endeavour.

Days Out

As a break from their hard work the TY students are looking forward to a fun day out when they go paintballing at an adventure centre in Co Wexford later this month. A trip to Dublin to view the CSI Forensics Exhibition in the Ambassador Theatre is also planned for early December.

Work Experience

Finally, good luck to all Transition Year students as they embark on their first period of work experience these two weeks.

Soccer

The soccer season kicked off this week with two emphatic victories for our school.
In the first round of the Munster Youth Cup Round 2 St Paul’s defeated Abbey Community College 8 – nil, while in the Munster Senior Cup Round 1 St Paul’s defeated Dungarvan C.B.S. 7 -1

Hurling

Our Under 16 ½ Hurling Team were narrowly beaten by a fancied Tipperary Ballingarry side last week in the quarter finals of the Munster Schools Hurling Championship. After a brave display of detrmination and hurling skills the teams succumbed on what was a dreadful inclement day to a team that just proved that little bit better. On another day things might have been different but the players can look forward to being very competitive in the upcoming County Championships. Well done to all involved. Our senior team travelled to Borrisoleigh last Friday evening to take on Thurles in a schools challenge match. This will no doubt stand to the team in their Senior Munster “B” group stage outing this week againt Gael Choláiste North Mon, Cork. Good luck to the lads.

Ladies Gaelic Football

As the GAA celebrated its 125th Anniversary, St Pauls was especially proud to be one of three schools chosen to represent Munster in a First year Gaelic Football Bitz in Croke Park. The Blitz was held on 27th October and involved our girls playing 4 other teams on the hallowed ground. The skill and sportsmanship shown on the occasion were highly impressive and their Coach and accompanying Mentors were justifiably proud of them.

Pictured below are members of the St. Paul’s Community College ladies gaelic football team who competed recently in Croke Park with SNA and Mentor Ms Andrea Comerford.

First Year Bonding Trip

Our first years enjoyed their annual bonding trip last week. The outing this year was to Piltown Woods where their Mentors facilitated multiple outdoor pursuits activities. They also cooked a barbecue in the woods and built camps using basic raw materials. The weather was great and all students were exhausted at the end of the trip. Below are a fewof the many photos taken on the day.

Waterford One World Centre

Four of our Transition Year students are currently participating in a training programme being run by Waterford One World Centre. The focus of this project is to promote global gender equality and empowerment of women. Part one of the project involves our students , together with transition year students from other Waterford schools, attending workshops to explore gender and equality issues. On completion of these training workshops the Transition Year students will then visit local 6th class primary classes to raise awareness of these issues.

Young Scientist Competition

Our Transition Year Young Scientists are busy at work on their various projects in preparation for the Young Scientist Competition which will take place in the RDS Dublin in January 2010. A wide variety of topics have been selected, ranging from time delays in receiving organ transplants, to water purification , to the social and behavioural effects of binge drinking in teenagers.

Warriors and Weapons

History really came alive for all our Transition year History students in the school library last week with a visit from History Live! For over an hour the audience was enthralled when re-enactor Michael Moylan outlined the history of weaponry, armour and the development of different fighting styles from Ancient Rome up to World War 2. Michael has a natural gift of communicating his subject and the students were really fascinated by the huge array of replica swords, shields, and both chain and plate armour he brought with him to illustrate the development of weapons through the ages.. The students were afforded a rare insight into the history of warfare and our thanks to Ms Hilary Cantwell, School Librarian, for her help in organising this event.

Sponsored Swim

On Saturday October 10th (weather permitting!) a member of staff, David Galvin, plans to swim from Duncannon to Dunmore East- a distance of approximately 10 k. David hopes to raise funds for the school’s new Autistic Centre, with the proceeds used to purchase sensory integration equipment which will assist greatly the progress of the students. Any support for this brave effort would be much appreciated .

Senior Hurling

St Pauls CC 2-16 : Col Chriost Ri 2-13

After a pulsating contest held in Youghal, our lads came out the winners in the first round of the Munster B Senior Hurling Championship “Corn Padraig”. St Pauls started off slowly with the Cork men showing the initiative taking an early 3 point lead. However our lads rallied with some fine scores to lead at the break with a commanding 2-8 to 0-7 advantage having played against the breeze. The second half was even better with both teams going hip-to-hip and again Chroist Ri showed strong by clawing back the St Pauls lead and eventually drawing level. But in the final minutes, cool heads were needed and Ian Galgey in outstanding form at full forward settled things with a fine point. This was followed by scores from Gavin O Brien and Stephen Roche who were both excellent in the middle of the field. A deserved but hard fought victory in the end.

Our next game is Weds 21st Oct at 2.30pm in Youghal against North Mon. Gael Colaiste led by headmaster - the famed Donal O Grady. They will be tough opposition!

SEPTEMBER

LOCAL HISTORY PROJECT

The Ty Local History Group have embarked on a project to collect memories! They want the people of Waterford to share with them their favourite memories of growing up in Waterford. They hope to have a very positive response from the public and would ask anyone, whatever age, to share with them what they remember about a particular day, event or personality from their memories of Waterford. The class hope to compile these accounts in a booklet which would be available for all to enjoy and which could prove a valuable record of the social history of our city. Anyone who would like to contribute please contact Class 4U, St.Paul’s Community College , Brown’s Road, Waterford. If you would prefer , the students could meet with you and listen to your story.
