Press Release March 2010

School life in St Paul’s Community College has witnessed an extra and exciting new dimension this year with the introduction of two new Post Leaving Certificate Courses, one in Information Technology and the other in Engineering Technology. These new courses, together with the long established and respected Business Studies/Secretarial Skills Post Leaving Cert course bring a total of 40 mature students to the school.

All three courses are full time and last for one year. They offer a mixture of “hands-on” practical training and academic work as well as work experience. The PLC courses are designed as a step towards skilled employment and, as such, they are closely linked to industry and its needs. Post Leaving Certificate courses adopt an integrated approach, focusing on technical knowledge, skill training related to employment and work experience.

If you have finished your secondary education in Ireland and would like to develop vocational and technological skills in order to get a job or to go into further education and training, then a Post-Leaving Certificate course may be the one you are looking for. The PLC should not be seen as only geared towards school leavers – it is also becoming an increasingly attractive option for the mature student who wishes to return to education and the workforce and for those who wish to reinforce and develop existing skills.

Successful completion of modules in these Level 5 F.E.T.A.C courses can earn a maximum of 400 points, which can be used for application to third level Colleges and Institutes of Technology

Application Forms for Post Leaving Certificate Courses in St Paul’s 2010-2011 are available from the school office by ringing 051-355816

WHAT THE STUDENTS SAY

Aideen Aulsberry, Business Skills/ Secretarial Skills PLC “What I find good about this course are the computer technology skills I have learned which will prove to be very useful in the working world. I also find that it is a good way to figure out what future career you might like to pursue, as it is a year between secondary school learning and college. Next year I hope to go on to college and embark on further training in business or accounting”

Sean Conway, Engineering Technology PLC “I think the course is very interesting and useful. It is a great stepping stone to get into college next year”.

Brian Quinlan, Information Technology PLC ‘You learn very good communication skills. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who has an interest in computers. It’s a great way to meet new people and prepare for college”

Ian Phelan, Engineering Technology – “I thought it was an excellent course, I learned a lot and it has really set me up for next year
