On Friday 21st March, our school took part in a performance in Christ Church Cathederal. Three original compositions based on the City’s Viking heritage were performed. Designed to nurture and develop the creative skills of students and to coincide with the City’s Anniversary Celebrations, the collaborative project was facilitated by poet Mark Roper, Composer Eric Sweeney and Fado Productions Kay Sinnott Browne. It was funded by Waterford City Council Arts Grants Scheme.
In September 2013, first and transition year classes were invited to compose three songs based on specific artefacts displayed at Reginald’s Tower, and Viking related themes. Research was undertaken as classes availed of free guided tours of the Tower. Under the guidance of poet and composer, and ably assisted by Ms. Dunne, Music Teacher and Hilary Cantwell, Librarian, the creative process began. Each composition is the manifestation of the students’ understanding of a culture, its people and a period in time, based on what was left behind.
